REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY

  • 20 hours/week flexible, however, work must overlap with standard business hours.

  • Must be available from January 6 to February 14, 2025 for the 2025 Solar Show.

  • Start date is preferably April 29, 2024, but is required by May 21, 2024.

  • Central Alberta residency is preferred and Albertan residency is required.

Solar Alberta is a nonprofit society that is dedicated to accelerating Alberta’s transition to a just and sustainable energy future. We do so by advocating, educating and serving as an industry and community hub for solar energy. We have been in operation for over 33 years. Our membership is currently made up of over 900 individuals and businesses.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Solar Alberta runs a week-long annual online Solar Show in late January/early February, which features live educational sessions. We also run an online monthly lunchtime Seminar Series from March to October. Seminars and Solar Show events include topics such as “Solar for Your Home or Business,” “Microgeneration Regulation 101” and “Solar Across the Americas.” Additionally, we run a few online and in-person networking events each year. 

Solar Alberta is seeking a part-time remote Education Event Lead to manage all of our public programs and events. The Education Event Lead will be in charge of soliciting speakers and sponsors for all events as well as managing all event planning, delivery, and follow-up. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Solar Alberta and serves on a team with 3 other program leads (Public Outreach, Member Services and Solar Training).

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Online Solar Show Management (public and industry oriented)

    1. Planning and developing content for approximately 8 online events in one week at the end of Jan or beginning of Feb annually

      • Industry-oriented content to be developed together with the Solar Training Lead

    2. Managing the concurrent online tradeshow

    3. Serving as the primary backend coordinator/Zoom stage manager for all Solar Show events (including AV checks and a great deal of other tasks in the lead up)

  • Online Seminar Series Management (public-oriented)

    1. Planning and developing content for approximately 8 online lunch hour events from Feb – Oct annually

    2. Serving as the primary backend coordinator/Zoom stage manager for all Seminar events (including AV checks and a great deal of other tasks in the lead up)

  • Online Workshop Management (industry-oriented)

    1. Planning and developing content for approximately 2 weekday morning events from Feb – Oct annually – to be developed together with the Solar Training Lead

    2. Serving as the primary backend coordinator for all Workshop events (including AV checks and a great deal of other tasks in the lead up)

  • Networking Event Management

    1. Planning and developing content for approximately 4 online and in-person events annually

    2. Incorporating in-person trade show components, when space allows

    3. Hosting online events and coordinating hosts for in-person events as needed

  • Overarching Event Management

    1. Generating and maintaining Solar Alberta’s programs and events calendar (through Solar Alberta google calendar & updates to overarching Critical Path)

    2. Planning topics and soliciting diverse speakers and sponsors for all events

    3. Serving as the primary liaison for all speakers, establishing all Speaker Agreements (with Executive Director review/signature) and ensuring the terms of all Speaker agreements are fulfilled

    4. Updating the annual event sponsorship framework for engagement and communicating script changes to the Public Outreach Lead for Sponsorship Package updates

    5. Serving as the primary liaison for all sponsors including Silver and Gold Supporters, ensuring the terms of all Sponsorship Agreements are fulfilled

    6. Recording all online event content on Zoom, lightly editing with iMovie, uploading videos to Solar Alberta’s Youtube account

    7. Following up with all online event registrants and speakers to share the event recordings, request feedback and attempt to engage further

    8. Collecting and reporting on feedback from all events/programs

    9. Generating ideas for new programs/events for the Executive Director’s consideration, and occasionally bringing to fruition new events/program ideas generated by the Solar Alberta board, staff team, and Executive Director

    10. Coordinating with other staff and volunteers as needed (e.g. sending event descriptions, bios and headshots of speakers, logos of sponsors to Public Outreach Lead for marketing and promotions)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Answering phone/email inquiries from the general public

  • Attending weekly team meetings

  • Providing weekly (written) & monthly (spreadsheet/tracking doc) updates to the Executive Director about all areas of work 

  • AGM/Annual Report support

  • Attending and supporting Solar Alberta events whenever possible

  • Supporting Solar Alberta advocacy & fundraising efforts as time and location allow

  • Generating ideas for how we could better accomplish our mission/vision

  • Support the Executive Director in the annual financial planning cycle/budgeting

  • Other duties as required (eg. operational correspondence, reviewing/editing other staff member’s work etc.)

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Qualities/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively

  • Exhibits high ethical standards and values that are complementary to Solar Alberta’s

  • Administratively independent

  • Proficiency in both written and verbal English communication.

  • Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders

Training/Education/Knowledge 

  • Knowledge of the solar industry, solar energy, and/or solar-related industries (e.g. green building sector) is an asset.

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field is preferred; a combination of education and equivalencies will be considered.

  • Knowledge of languages other than English are an asset.

Previous Experience Preferences

  • Solar-related work background

  • Program/event planning & management

  • Zoom meeting and Zoom webinar management

  • Google Suite and remote office environment

  • iMovie editing & Youtube channel management

COMPENSATION & ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS

Pay and Benefit Matters

  • Compensation will be $1040 every two weeks ($26/hr @ 20hrs/week).

  • Comprehensive individual or family benefits will be optional (including STD/LTD etc.)

    • Employees pay for Short Term and Long Term Disability premiums, to avoid a scenario in which they will have to pay tax on these benefits should they ever have to collect, and Solar Alberta covers the cost of the remaining health benefit premiums.

  • WCB coverage is included.

  • 20hrs of paid sick leave per year and 4hrs of paid personal leave per year.

  • Vacation allowance will be three 20-hour weeks per year on an accrual basis.

  • Paid winter break/office closure between Dec 25th and New Years Day.

  • Statutory Holidays will be recognized, including National Day for Truth & Reconciliation and National Indigenous People’s Day.

    • With the exception of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, National Indigenous People’s Day, and Remembrance Day, should staff wish to observe Statutory Holidays on alternative days that better reflect their beliefs and values, they may flex these days accordingly.

Remote/Home Office Matters

  • Applicant must have a computer, internet connection, electricity, & space.

  • A wifi-enabled phone number will be provided. 

  • Home office electricity emissions will be offset monthly by Solar Alberta.

  • Documentation will be provided for claiming home office expenses in tax filing.

  • This is primarily a remote office; however, occasional in-person event/meeting attendance is required. Travel time and costs will be compensated for any in-person requirements.
