Empowering the Next Generation: WiRE and Gender Hub Azerbaijan Unite to Ignite Youth in Energy

BAKU, Azerbaijan — In a powerful display of intergenerational collaboration, Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) and Gender Hub Azerbaijan (GHA) hosted a landmark event on November 13, 2024, titled "Women in Renewable Energy: Highlighting Role of Women in Addressing Climate Change." The event, held at the Gender Hub Azerbaijan Office in Baku, brought together a diverse group of attendees, from seasoned energy executives to students as young as 15, creating a vibrant and inclusive space for dialogue.

A Platform for Diverse Voices

The atmosphere was electric as participants gathered in a semi-circle, fostering a sense of community and equal participation. GHA's Co-founder and Executive Director, Maryam Majidova, and WiRE's Founder, President, and CEO, Joanna Osawe, opened the event with inspiring remarks. The panel, moderated by Majidova, featured a distinguished lineup of experts, including Hajar Huseynova, an Environmental Policy and Management Expert from ADA University, alongside WiRE representatives: Farida Majidzada, a WiRE volunteer from Azerbaijan; Yasemin Somuncu, WiRE Turkiye Chapter Leader; and Dr. Rahaf Ajaj, WiRE UAE Chapter Leader.

The conversation was rich and multi-faceted, with panelists and attendees discussing a wide range of topics related to energy equality, inclusion, and the critical role of women in addressing climate change. The event's catering of traditional Azerbaijani delicacies further enhanced the sense of cultural exchange and community.

Youth Lead the Way

Youth as young as 15 years old came out to learn and have their voices heard

One of the most remarkable aspects of the event was the significant attendance of young people. Several high school students, driven by a passion for the environment and a desire to shape their future, attended to have their voices heard. They seized the unique opportunity to engage in direct conversation with senior energy executives, asking questions and sharing their perspectives.

This inspiring exchange demonstrated a two-way street of learning, where experienced professionals gained fresh insights from the next generation, and young leaders received guidance from those who have built careers in the sector. Several of these students were so inspired that they have already joined WiRE's Junior Ambassador program, an initiative designed to equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to become tomorrow's energy leaders. 💡 This enthusiastic engagement from Azerbaijan's youth fills the WiRE community with pride and hope for a sustainable future.

Looking Ahead to COP29 and Beyond

The event's success underscores a crucial theme of the COP29 agenda: the importance of inclusivity and empowerment in the global fight against climate change. By connecting different generations and diverse professional backgrounds, the event exemplified the collaborative spirit needed to tackle complex energy challenges. 🤝 It highlights that a sustainable future depends not only on technological innovation but also on human connection, mentorship, and a shared commitment to a just and equitable energy transition. The conversations sparked at this gathering will undoubtedly contribute to the broader dialogue at COP29, reinforcing the message that the energy transition is a movement for all, with women and young people at its heart.
