Fostering Global Connections: WiRE Leaders Strengthen Bonds at COP29

🌎BAKU, AZERBAIJAN — Amidst the high-stakes climate negotiations of COP29, the Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) organization cultivated a different kind of progress: strengthening global relationships through two intimate team-building dinners. While the world's leaders debated policy and pledges, WiRE leaders from around the world gathered in Baku to share insights, align on strategic goals, and forge a stronger global network. These dinners proved that impactful collaboration can flourish beyond the formal conference halls, serving as a unique platform for cross-chapter dialogue and reinforcing WiRE's mission to champion women in the energy sector on a global scale.

Held on November 12th and 16th, the dinners brought together chapter leaders and key executives to build rapport and discuss the organization's future. The first gathering at Shakh Garden (also known as Han Restaurant), located in an old historical mansion dating back to the 12th century, included WiRE Turkiye leaders Yasemin Somuncu and Selen Inal, along with WiRE UAE Chapter Leader Dr. Rahaf Ajaj. They were joined by WiRE's executive team, including Founder & CEO Joanna Osawe, Operations Director Andrew Osawe, and long time WiRE partner, Michelle Branigan, CEO of EHRC. The conversation flowed freely, exchanging best practices and discussing new initiatives in an informal setting that fostered genuine connection.

A highlight of the first dinner was the ceremonial serving of Shah Plov, a signature Azerbaijani rice pilaf. The dish, encased in a golden crust, was ceremoniously lit and then cracked open, a tradition symbolizing prosperity and the 'flame of life.' "It was a truly memorable experience," said Joanna Osawe. "Just like the Shah Plov, which requires many different ingredients to create a magnificent whole, our organization is made stronger by the diverse contributions of each chapter. This dinner was a beautiful reminder of that, and it was a great way to reinforce our shared purpose."

The second dinner, hosted at İzmir Restaurant, expanded the circle to include WiRE Azerbaijan leaders Inara Ahmudova and Aynur Mahmudova. The warm and cozy atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for a continued discussion on WiRE’s global and individual chapter goals. The group enjoyed a delicious fusion of Azerbaijani, European, and Turkish cuisine, which mirrored the fusion of ideas and cultures being exchanged. This relaxed setting allowed for a deeper level of team building, as leaders shared personal experiences and found common ground, strengthening the bonds that will support their professional collaboration.

These dinners offered a valuable opportunity to move from global strategy to tangible action, reinforcing WiRE's commitment to empowering women in renewable energy. The informal setting allowed leaders to connect on a personal level, building the trust and rapport essential for effective international collaboration. The discussions, which spanned from local chapter challenges to global expansion strategies, will be instrumental in shaping WiRE's future initiatives. The insights and connections forged during these dinners will be a driving force for WiRE in the coming year as they work toward a more inclusive and sustainable future for the renewable energy sector. We extend a sincere thank you to both Shakh Garden and İzmir Restaurant for their warm welcome, fantastic service, and amazing food that made these memorable evenings possible.
