Observer status for WiRE at the 28th Annual Conference of Parties (COP28)
Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) at COP28: Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future
The 28th annual Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is a significant event that brings together representatives from countries around the world to discuss and implement measures to combat climate change. This year, a notable participant is Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the role of women in the renewable energy sector.
WiRE has been granted observer status at COP28, a testament to their significant contributions and commitment to renewable energy. This status allows them to actively participate in the conference, engage with key stakeholders, and contribute their expertise and insights on renewable energy.
In the lead-up to COP28, WiRE organized a series of pre-conference events called "COP28 Road to Climate Change Series". The motto of this series is "The road to climate change is not found, it’s made, and women are paving the way!". These events covered topics such as the amazing achievements of women in tackling climate change, the UAE’s Energy Transition from gas to renewables, and the innovative solutions of students in energy and technology. The last event of this series, Earth to Sky: The UAE’s Energy Transition, will take place on November 28, 2023, just before COP28 begins on December 1.
During the two-week conference, several volunteers from WiRE will be speaking at various high level functions. These volunteers, who are experts in their respective fields, will share their knowledge and experiences, discuss innovative solutions for climate change, and highlight the crucial role of women in driving the renewable energy transition.
In addition to these events, WiRE’s presence at COP28 also signifies a broader trend of increasing female representation in climate diplomacy. The COP28 Presidency has announced measures to support women’s leadership and participation in climate diplomacy. These measures include financial assistance for women delegates, technical training sessions, and support for an international conference.
WiRE’s participation in COP28 underscores their commitment to promoting gender equality in the renewable energy sector. Their presence at this global platform not only amplifies their advocacy for women’s leadership in renewable energy but also contributes to shaping a sustainable and inclusive future.
As we look forward to COP28 and beyond, it is clear that organizations like WiRE play a crucial role in driving progress towards a more sustainable world. Their work serves as an inspiration for all those committed to promoting renewable energy and gender equality.
