WiRE & The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Hub

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the foundational international environmental treaty to combat climate change. Adopted in 1992, its ultimate objective is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere "at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic (human-induced) interference with the climate system."

The Conference of Parties, or COP, is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It's an annual meeting where representatives from countries, international organizations, and civil society convene to assess progress in dealing with climate change.

Why WIRE's Presence Matters

Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) is present at COP to ensure that the voices and needs of women are heard in climate negotiations. It's crucial because climate change disproportionately affects women, especially in developing nations where they are often responsible for securing food, water, and fuel. By advocating for policies that empower women in the renewable energy sector, WIRE helps to promote gender equality and make climate solutions more effective and equitable.

What Observer Status Means

Having "observer status" at COP allows an organization like WIRE to attend the conference and its various sessions. While observers can't formally vote on decisions, they can participate in a variety of ways, including:

  • Attending official sessions and side events to stay informed and network.

  • Hosting their own events to raise awareness and present their work.

  • Advocating and lobbying with country delegations and other groups to influence the negotiation outcomes.

This status provides a platform for civil society groups, businesses, and non-governmental organizations to contribute to the climate discussion and hold governments accountable.

Our Role at the UNFCCC

WIRE is proud to have observer status with the UNFCCC. This recognition validates our work and gives us a crucial platform to advance our mission of promoting women's leadership and participation in the transition to renewable energy. We are committed to using this opportunity to contribute to a more inclusive and just climate future for everyone.
