Part Time Calgary-Area Position Description

REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY

  • Primarily a remote office, however Calgary-area residence is required for this position as in-person event/meeting attendance is required once or twice a month.

  • 20 hours/week flexible, however work hours must overlap with standard business hours.

  • Tuesday & Thursday evenings are also required from September through April.

  • Start date is preferably August 14, 2023 but is required by September 5, 2023.

Solar Alberta is a nonprofit society that is dedicated to accelerating Alberta’s transition to a just and sustainable energy future. We do so by advocating, educating and serving as an industry and community hub for solar energy. We have been in operation for over 32 years. POSITION OVERVIEW

Solar Alberta is seeking a part-time employee to manage our Solar Training Program and to represent us in the Calgary-area. While the majority of the role is remote, this position will also be responsible for in-person event, presentation and meeting attendance in the Calgary-area. 

Solar Alberta currently runs seven (7) live online courses on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from September to April. We also record these courses and edit them for ongoing access through our website. Courses include topics such as “Solar PV Design & Modelling,” “Working with Alberta’s Wire Providers” and “The Economics of Grid Tied Solar PV.” The course content is delivered by contracted industry professionals, and the Solar Training Lead is in charge of managing course planning, promotion, delivery, and follow-up. 

This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Solar Alberta.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Industry-Oriented Course Management

  • Planning

    • Liaising with teachers (eg. coordinating course dates with teachers etc.)

    • Being the primary point of contact for course participants and prospective participants (eg. responding to course inquiries & sending online meeting invites)

    • Developing and updating exams for the downloadable courses

    • Managing course registration (including bulk course purchase orders)

    • Editing introductory slide decks for the beginning of each new course

    • Setting up zoom meetings and booking/coordinating with locations for any in-person courses/workshops, including sending out calendar invitations after

    • Occasionally bringing to fruition new course or workshop ideas

  • Promotion

    • Supporting the website management team by providing content updates to the ‘Solar Alberta Training’ and ‘Solar Training Videos’ pages on our website

    • Supporting the Public Outreach Lead in the development and distribution of promotional materials to the general public, our members, our followers and all our partners on a regular basis.

    • Promoting our course Diversity Discount code to equity-deserving demographics 

  • Delivery

    • Hosting the Zoom meeting room each Tuesday and Thursday evening

    • Supporting the teachers and participants with their tech issues

    • Giving a brief presentation about Solar Alberta at the start of each set of classes

    • Taking attendance

    • Recording courses

  • Follow-up

    • Drafting and sending course completion certificates to participants

    • Editing the recordings using iMovie and uploading them to YouTube

    • Collecting and reporting on feedback from students

    • Tracking and reporting on attendance data and feedback survey results

Industry-Oriented Outreach and Member Engagement

  • Primary person responsible for representing Solar Alberta at in-person external events, meetings, and community presentations in the Calgary-area.

  • Primary person responsible for hosting Solar Alberta events, meetings and tours in the Calgary-area.

  • Primary in-person liaison with Calgary-area partners.

  • Occasional in-person Calgary-area member engagement.

  • Primary person responsible for rolling out the new Solar Alberta Diversity Scholarship.

  • Primary Host/MC for periodic online and in-person industry-oriented workshops.

General Responsibilities

  • Providing weekly written updates to the Executive Director about all areas of work.

  • Documenting processes for all matters.

  • Attending weekly online team meetings 

  • Operational correspondence, including reviewing/editing other staff member’s work

  • Attending and supporting Solar Alberta events whenever possible

  • Supporting Solar Alberta advocacy & fundraising efforts as time and location allow

  • Support with annual financial planning cycle/budgeting and Annual Report drafting

  • Generate ideas for how we could better accomplish our mission/vision

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

Qualities

  • Adaptability: demonstrate a willingness to be flexible in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency, taking direction as necessary.

  • Good judgement: assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make timely and clear decisions.

  • Comfort with networking is essential.

  • Must be administratively independent.

Training/Education/Knowledge 

  • Knowledge of the solar industry, solar energy, and/or solar-related industries (eg. green building sector) is required.

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field is preferred; a combination of education and equivalencies will be considered.

Experience

  • Previous experience working efficiently in an online environment is essential.

  • Previous experience with program/event planning is essential.

  • Previous experience with organizational/program/event marketing/promotion is essential.

Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in both written and verbal English communication is essential. 

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders is essential. 

  • Public speaking ability is essential.

  • Proficiency with Zoom meeting management and Google Suite is essential.

  • Proficiency with iMovie or willingness to learn how to use it is essential. A Mac can be provided for this purpose, if need be.

COMPENSATION & ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS

Pay and Benefit Matters

  • Compensation will be $1040 every two weeks ($26/hr @ 20hrs/week).

  • Comprehensive individual or family benefits will be optional (including STD/LTD etc.)

  • WCB coverage is included.

  • Vacation allowance will be three 20-hour weeks per year on an accrual basis.

  • Paid winter break/office closure between Dec 25th and New Years Day.

  • 20hrs of paid sick leave per year and 4hrs of paid personal leave per year.

  • Statutory Holidays will be recognized, including National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.

Home Office Matters

  • Lead will be required to maintain their own laptop, internet connection and space. 

  • A wifi-enabled phone number will be provided. 

  • Home office electricity emissions will be offset monthly by Solar Alberta.

  • Documentation will be provided for claiming home office expenses in tax filing.

  • Travel time/mileage/parking will be compensated for in-person requirements.
