COP28 - Voices of Change: Reflections on the Energize Equity Roundtable
The International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES) played a pivotal role in the success of the Energize Equity Roundtable. INWES is a global network of organizations of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), reaching over 60 countries worldwide. Founded in 2002, INWES is a not-for-profit corporation governed by a Board of Directors representing organization, corporate, University/Institute, and individual memberships. Their mission is to build a better future worldwide through the full and effective participation of women and girls in all aspects of STEM. INWES’s commitment to supporting women and girls in engineering and science across the world aligns seamlessly with the goals of the Energize Equity initiative. Their extensive network and collaborative approach were instrumental in facilitating the roundtable discussions, bringing together diverse voices, and fostering an environment of inclusivity.
WiRE would like to extend a special note of gratitude to INWES for their invaluable contribution to the Energize Equity Roundtable. Their dedication and efforts significantly enhanced the event’s impact, helping to spotlight gender issues, empower individuals and organizations, and foster inclusive workplaces. WiRE looks forward to future collaborations with INWES in our shared mission to illuminate barriers and champion inclusivity in the climate sector. Together, we can continue to energize equity and drive meaningful change.
Ms. Gauri Singh, the Deputy Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
The Energize Equity initiative, initiated and spearheaded by WiRE, is a campaign designed to illuminate the barriers faced by individuals, particularly women and underrepresented individuals, working in the climate sector. As part of this campaign, WiRE gathers information via the Energize Equity Survey, shares stories of struggle and triumph via its social media platforms, and compiles and shares analytics from the data collected.
The keynote address was delivered by Ms. Gauri Singh, the Deputy Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). With over 30 years of experience in policy, advocacy, and project implementation within the field of renewable energy and sustainable development, Ms. Singh brought a wealth of knowledge to the discussion. She addressed the intersection of gender and energy, livelihood, finance access, and negotiation at COP28, emphasizing our collective role in mitigating climate change. She also extended an invitation to all attendees to seize every opportunity to voice their thoughts and become part of the solution.
The event was further enriched by the World Cafe discussions, where attendees shared their perspectives on the challenges faced by individuals in organizations, identified gaps in existing solutions, and advocated for actionable strategies. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their valuable contributions.
The Energize Equity Roundtable was a vibrant hub of activity and dynamic discussions. It was a testament to the power of collective action and the potential for change when diverse voices come together. As we reflect on the success of the event, we look forward to continuing our support for communities and organizations in their journey towards fostering workplace inclusivity. The roundtable was a catalyst for change, a testament to the power of collective action, and a blueprint for a sustainable future.
