WiRE Kenya’s Field Trip to Roam

The WiRE Kenya x Roam field trip organized by Liz Mubari

Skillful Roam technicians assembling advanced electric motorcycles

Africa’s future is indeed electric! On December 5th, 2024, Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) Kenya chapter, organized and led by Liz Mubari, visited Roam’s manufacturing plant to explore the future of sustainable mobility in East Africa.

Roam’s Monica Mwalo talking about their latest innovation, the Roam Air

During the visit, we toured the battery innovation centre and assembly line for Roam’s latest innovation,  the Roam Air, a  100% electric motorcycle designed specifically for the African continent. We reviewed  the electric battery swapping stations and technical portable charging options available for the bodaboda riders in Kenya.

We also had an engaging  presentation from the Roam team which highlighted the high uptake of electric motorcycles in East Africa, caused by high cost saving benefits (of up to 40%) of electric motorcycles as compared to traditional petrol-powered motorcycles.

Roam’s Joy Too provided a comprehensive technical tour, which allowed for a close examination of the plant's diverse components and their functions.

Furthermore, in Kenya, strategic partnerships with financial institutions have made the purchasing of electric motorcycles easier, advancing the goal of revolutionizing urban mobility by offering affordable and environment-friendly two wheelers that are locally designed and manufactured.

In the face of the climate crisis which is exacerbated by the use of fossil fuels in transportation, we are challenged to reimagine how we commute and actively take bold steps towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for our continent. Thankfully, we have visionary companies like Roam tackling the issue head on.

The WiRE Kenya women who participated in the field trip were from diverse backgrounds, ranging from engineering to entrepreneurship; all united by a shared interest in the EV industry. They were eager to gain insights into the EV design and manufacturing process, and explore the cutting edge battery technologies shaping the sector. Furthermore, they were enthusiastic about networking and finding potential collaboration opportunities with Roam and other EV manufacturers. The tour was led entirely by the amazing women working in the Roam team.

WiRE was thrilled with the incredible field trip facilitated by Roam and their amazing team. Many thanks to Monica Mwalo, Juliana Mathilo, Joy Too, Rosemary Mbuthia, Angela Mayaka, Javan Olouch. We are so grateful for Roam’s partnership and look forward to future collaborations.
