Eric Chassard Biography

Eric Chassard is President and CEO of Bruce Power. Eric previously served as the company’s Executive Vice-President of Projects and Engineering, where he successfully led the on-time and on-budget delivery of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program, which included delivering the first of six unit refurbishments ahead of schedule and under budget in 2023.

Eric has an extensive background in the nuclear industry and has held a series of senior executive positions both in nuclear operations and overseeing multibillion-dollar project portfolios. Prior to joining Bruce Power, Eric was CEO of Menter Newydd, a joint venture between Hitachi, Bechtel and JGC responsible for the construction of the Wylfa nuclear power plants. He also held increasingly senior positions within the AREVA Group, most recently serving as Senior Executive Vice-President of AREVA covering worldwide engineering, supply chain and project activities.

Eric has a degree in Engineering specializing in Nuclear Engineering and holds a post-graduate diploma in Nuclear Reactor Physics. In 2018, he was awarded the French National Order of Merit for his leadership contributions to AREVA. Eric proudly became a Canadian citizen in 2023.

Sylviah Mwaura, Senior Associate Energy Access Finance at GreenMax Capital Advisors

Sylviah Mwaura is a highly driven, self-motivated, and multifaceted professional with over eight years of experience in the retail banking sector, primarily in credit and business development departments. She also possesses three years of consulting experience in training, quantitative and qualitative research, and financial technology management. She has a proven track record in leadership, innovation, product development, and implementation, having successfully managed various projects from inception to completion across different organizational levels.

Grace Perkins, Director of Quality Management at Husk Power

Grace Perkins is passionate about helping businesses operate more efficiently and effectively. For the past nine years, she has worked on issues related to electricity access in Africa, consistently at the intersection of the public and private sectors. Her skillset encompasses building partnerships, business development, strategy, operations, and team and project management.

She recently announced that she is starting a new position as Director of Quality Management at Husk Power. After serving minigrid companies at the Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA), she is excited to return to working directly on energy access with minigrid industry leaders and to contribute to the scale and speed of minigrid development across the sector. In this role, she will focus on building out systems and processes for Husk as the company expands and grows. Her work will also include expansion into new African countries, notably the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a new market for her personally. As she embarks on this new chapter, she is eager to connect with those in her network who have experience in the DRC and welcomes them to reach out for a conversation.

Lesley Gallinger Biography

Under the leadership of Lesley Gallinger, the IESO oversees the safe and reliable operation of Ontario’s bulk electricity system, ensuring affordable electricity is available when and where people need it. As part of its mandate to plan and prepare for the future, the IESO works with sector partners to identify energy needs, develop supply options, drive innovation, and harness data and information for decision-making. The IESO also delivers energy efficiency and demand management programs that contribute to the cost-effectiveness and reliability of Ontario’s power system.

Throughout her career, Ms. Gallinger has focused on driving strategic change within complex organizations to deliver shareholder and stakeholder value. Prior to joining the IESO, she served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Elexicon Energy, a large municipally-owned electricity distributor in Ontario, which she led through a sizeable merger integration. She has also held senior roles in the electricity sector that include Chief Strategy and Financial Officer at the Electrical Safety Authority as well as VP, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs and Chief Financial Officer at Oakville Hydro.

Ms. Gallinger sits on several boards, including the Ontario Energy Network, where she is Past Chair, and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. Prior to joining the IESO she also served on the boards of the Ontario Energy Association and the Electricity Distributors Association. She holds a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business at York University, is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a Certified Public Accountant (Illinois). She has also completed the Chartered Director and Audit Committee Certified program at the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University.

WiRE UK x Drax Power Station Field Trip

WiRE UK x Drax Power Station Field Trip

Join WiRE UK on February 4th for a site visit to the Drax Power Station, the UK’s largest operating power station responsible for 11% of renewable energy generation in 2023.

The power plant was converted from coal to biomass between 2013-2018 and Drax now plans to convert two of the biomass units to Biomass with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) to remove 4 Mt of CO2 annually by 2030.

The site visit will begin with a lunch and learn from 12-2pm with several of Drax’s senior female leaders followed by a two-hour tour of the facility.  From the scale of the turbine hall and cooling towers to the control room, you’ll learn how electricity is generated from sustainable biomass and the critical role for BECCS will play in meeting the UK’s net zero ambition.

Attendees must arrange their own transportation to and from Selby train station. A shared taxi will be arranged to/from Selby station to the site. Please indicate in your registration whether you will be using the shared taxi or arriving with your own vehicle.

Josie Erzetic

Josie is the President and CEO at the Electrical Safety Authority, a provincial safety regulator responsible for the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, electrical product safety, Licensed Electrical Contractors and Local Distribution Companies. Prior to this role, Josie was the ESA’s Chief Regulatory Officer and General Counsel with responsibility for the regulations, legal, communications and government relations functions. Josie has spent most of her career in the electricity sector. Before joining ESA, she held various roles at Ontario Power Generation including as Vice President, Corporate Business Development, responsible for development of hydro, thermal, solar and energy storage projects. In particular, she proudly led the development of several renewable generation projects as joint ventures between Ontario Power Generation and First Nations partners. Josie began her career as a lawyer in private practice specializing in energy, environmental and planning law. She received her ICD.D designation in 2016 and was called to the Bar in 1993. Josie has also served on a number of Boards and as an advisor in the electricity sector.

Farah Alexis

Farah Alexis is the Chief Ethics Officer at Hydro One Limited, providing leadership for administering the Code of Business Conduct and providing employees and managers with tools and advice to live the Company’s values. Join us on a Field Trip to Denby Pottery's Solar PV System!

Join WiRE UK and STEM Select on August 12th for a site visit to Ylem Energy's Denby Pottery Village Solar Farm to learn more about solar energy and how it is being used to meet the needs of Denby Pottery Village. The site visit will last between 60-90 minutes and includes a tour of the solar farm and Denby Pottery Village.

For those travelling by public transport, the meeting point is Derby Rail Station at 12:30pm. The proceeds from the £10 registration fee will be used to provide collective transport to and from Derby station to the solar farm. For those travelling by private vehicle, the meeting point is Denby Pottery Village.

WiRE UK will book a venue close to Derby Rail Station for an early lunch (~11:30am) before the site visit. Please indicate in the registration if you would like to join so that we book enough spaces. Kindly note, lunch is not provided and will be at your own expense.

The site visit will happen rain or shine, so prepare accordingly.

Join us for an exciting field trip to South Branch Wind Farm on Global Wind Day near Ottawa, hosted by Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) and EDP Renewables.

This is a unique opportunity to explore EDP Renewables’ South Branch Wind Farm project with a guided tour and learn about their innovative work in the renewable energy sector. The site is approximately 70 km south of Ottawa (about a 45-50 min drive) and has been operational for nearly 10 years. South Branch Wind Farm has an installed capacity of 30 megawatts (MW). South Branch's generation is equivalent to the consumption of thousands of Ontario homes. During the tour, you will be able to see the turbines up close and check out some of the other project infrastructure, such as the substation and the operations and maintenance building.

EDP Renewables North America is a leader in the North America renewable energy sector. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA) is a division of EDP Renewables. EDP Renewables’ story in the U.S. began in 2007. They have developed more than 8,800 megawatts (MW) and operate more than 8,400 MW of renewable energy projects that generate clean power, enrich rural communities, and accelerate growth toward a sustainable future.

Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) is a rapidly growing organization with over 25 chapters, over 180 events with more than 7,000 attendees, and an online community of 26,000 and counting. We are delighted to have Tanis Ostermann, Principal & Founder of CanSustain as our speaker. Tanis brings over two decades of experience in environmental and sustainability management, having spearheaded numerous projects and provided expert advice across various sectors.

The focus of this event is to address the practical training and awareness needs, as well as barriers, that have been globally identified for all types of organizations (government, community, business, NGO) in advancing circular economy adoption. The scope of the material is designed to be universally applicable, catering to a wide array of organizations and resonating with diverse cultures.

Our objective is to inspire and equip individuals, businesses, and communities with the knowledge and tools necessary for transitioning towards a more sustainable and circular economy.

About Tanis Ostermann,

Tanis Ostermann is Principal & Founder of CanSustain, a Manitoba firm specializing in environmental and sustainability management issues and solutions. She has worked in the fields of environmental and sustainability management system development and improvement for twenty five years, having led the design, facilitation and development of sustainability focused projects.

Ms. Ostermann has experience in utility, aerospace, clean-tech, water management, academic, airport management, retail, agri-food, telecom and municipal sectors. She has provided advice on the most pressing environmental and sustainability issues in the world today, including climate change, municipal planning, ESG, clean tech advancement, corporate sustainability governance and circular economies.

She is an Environmental Professional, certified through the Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board. Ms. Ostermann has a Bachelor of Science in environmental toxicology and a Master of Environment focusing on the use of existing, well-functioning management systems to enhance sustainability performance.

Most recently she has served on the Expert Advisory Committee under the Manitoba Climate and Green Plan; as the Manitoba Representative to the Sustainable Development Advisory Council under the Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada, and on the Canadian Standardization Advisory Committee on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Sustainability of Standards Council of Canada.

This course focuses on interactive residential and commercial-scale projects less than 1 MW.
