BONN, Germany — Speaking at a high-profile press conference during the SB64 climate meetings, Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) issued an urgent, evidence-based call to global leaders, negotiators, and the international press to structurally reform the clean energy transition through gender-responsive climate action.
The statement, delivered by Shraddha Nair, Lead of the WiRE UK Chapter, alongside virtual representation from Co-Chair Dr. Dola Oluteye, challenged the prevailing narrative of the global energy sector’s progress. Pointing to severe industry stagnation, WiRE presented a statistical stocktake revealing that the rapid scaling of renewable infrastructure has completely left gender equity behind.

A "Stagnation Problem": The Battle Half-Won
"The clean energy transition is scaling at a historic pace, but gender equity is standing completely still," Nair stated, presenting critical workforce data compiled by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
According to IRENA’s landmark Gender Perspective report, the historical momentum that saw female representation in the global clean energy sector climb from 21% in 2013 to 32% in 2019 has officially plateaued. Despite millions of green jobs being added to the global economy since 2019, the share of those positions held by women has not budget by a single percentage point.
The structural barriers inside the sector are even more severe when analyzed by role:
Administrative Roles: Women represent 45% of the workforce.
STEM Positions: Representation plummets to just 28%.
Senior Leadership: Representation drops to a staggering 19%.
"This is no longer a pipeline problem; it is a stagnation problem," Nair emphasized. "We cannot build a sustainable future on stagnant equity."
The WiRE Blueprint: Bridging High Policy and Grassroots Reality
In response to this stagnation, WiRE outlined its mission to disrupt traditional energy sector hierarchies by bridging high-level international policy with the direct, boots-on-the-ground economic realities of global communities. The organization coordinates its global movement through three central operational pillars:

The original Toronto, Ontario hub continues to scale massive professional networks in the country’s economic heartland, while the bilingual chapter in Montreal, Quebec fosters hydro-power innovation.
Technical Networks: WiRE highlighted the success of regional branches like The PATNA Initiative. Founded by Dr. Dola Oluteye, PATNA aggregates pan-African expertise around maritime decarbonization and shipping energy pathways, structurally translating African-centered climate realities into formal UN-level policies.
Rapid Global Footprint Expansion
Underscoring the massive demand for institutional equity reform, WiRE officially celebrated its newest European anchor launch in Vienna, Austria. Supported heavily by national diplomatic infrastructure, the Vienna hub serves as a critical strategic anchor given Austria’s status as an Equal by 30 government signatory.

Landmark 2027 Initiative: The Global Coalition for Social and Sustainable Development
The centerpiece of WiRE’s SB64 press conference was the preview announcement of its most ambitious global framework yet: the Global Coalition for Social and Sustainable Development (GCSSD).
Incubated under the sponsorship of WiRE and scheduled to launch officially in 2027, the GCSSD will function as a worldwide data-verification and accountability mechanism. Utilizing a unique three-tier membership model and a rigid 5-Step Data Integrity Loop, the coalition maps field-level metrics directly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Doha Programme of Action, and the newly adopted Belém Gender Action Plan.
The coalition is designed to force global markets and climate forums to evaluate clean energy infrastructure projects not just by the raw megawatts they generate, but by the social and sustainable development they catalyze.
Crucially, the framework addresses geopolitical equity : all generated membership funds will bypass administrative overhead and flow directly into funding sustainable clean power, clean water, quality education, and infrastructure development within UN-designated Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

As week one of the negotiations draws to a close, WiRE has formally extended an open invitation to international delegates, parties, and corporate organizations present at SB64 to align with the framework.
